Planning a Surprise Trip for your Partner

Have you ever planned a surprise trip for your partner?

When Josh Took Me on a Surprise Trip

For my birthday last year, Josh took me on a surprise trip to Walt Disney World! He had to tell me before he chose the dates, because we needed to plan around my work schedule. Therefore, I did know about it for a few weeks before we actually went. Even still, it was so sweet! I was so surprised when I opened up a card with two hand-drawn plane tickets for us!

Other Examples of Surprise Trips

My parents have both gifted each other with a surprise trip in recent years. For Christmas one year, my mom planned a week-long trip in January for her and my dad. His birthday is the first week of January, so it was perfect timing. He had NO idea. Not even the slightest clue! He was so confused and surprised when he opened up his Christmas gift. Inside a box was a shirt telling him he’d be leaving in a couple of days for a trip to Disney World and a cruise!

The next year, for my mom’s 50th birthday, he wanted to one-up her and plan a cruise to celebrate. He invited all of their family and friends to join them. He ended up with a group of 18 people onboard! Keeping a secret is not my dad’s forte. Plus, he doesn’t know anything about planning a trip since my mom always takes care of everything, so she had definitely figured out that something was happening. Even still, she was blown away by all of the people who came. She even ended up being surprised quite a few times throughout the trip as a new guest showed up; they met some at the airport, some at their pre-cruise hotel and then some onboard the ship!

If your partner is normally the one who plans the trips, we suggest working with a travel agent who can help you with all the details. Josh works at this travel agency, and I’d highly recommend them to help you if you don’t know where to begin!

A Few Tips for Planning a Surprise Trip

Be Realistic

Be realistic about whether you can make the whole trip a complete surprise. In our case, Josh surprised me with the trip on my birthday but then I had to help choose the dates (we had to plan around me getting time off from work).

Keep the Planning Separate

Try to keep the emails, notes, details, etc. somewhere your partner won’t find them! If possible, try not to use a shared computer or email account to prevent them from seeing anything they’re not supposed to.

Have a Confidante

It can be so, so hard to keep a secret from your partner. You’ll probably feel like you’re going to burst if you have to keep the secret bottled up! Whether it’s a friend or another family member, choose someone to confide in who you can trust to keep the secret. Try to limit it to just 1 person or a couple of people. The more people know, the more likely it is for someone to spill the beans! Bonus points if its someone who knows your partner well, who can help give advice on what they would like.

Has Your Partner Ever Taken You On a Surprise Trip?

I think it is so romantic when someone plans a whole trip for their partner! Planning a trip is a lot of work and it really shows how much you love them that you are willing to put in that effort, all while keeping a secret! It can definitely be hard sometimes to keep secrets from your spouse though, and I’d definitely be tempted to let it slip! Has your significant other ever surprised you with a trip?
